'Dune 2' nears $700 million at the global box office

The box office sands continue to flow for "Dune: Part Two," which is approaching $700 million globally.

After eight weeks of release, director Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic has earned $276 million in North America and $419 million internationally, bringing its total to $695.8 million.

It's an outstanding landmark in the post-COVID era; only five films in 2023, eight in 2022, and five in 2021 surpassed $700 million.

"Dune 2" is currently the highest-grossing film of 2024, both domestically and internationally.

Other than the United States and Canada, the largest markets are the United Kingdom ($48.8 million), China ($48.5 million), France ($42.6 million), Germany ($39.7 million), and Australia ($22.5 million).

"Dune: Part Two" has considerably outperformed its predecessor, 2021's "Dune," which made $433 million despite also debuting on HBO Max.

The sequel's exceptional staying power is due to a number of variables

including positive word of mouth, an A-list cast headlined by Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, and interest in Imax and other premium formats.
